Making Compare Infobase a better place to work March 14, 2010

Since October 2009, we at Compare Infobase are working with  a missionary zeal to make our place of work one of the finest in SME segment. I now share actions which have got us going…

  1. Identifying and building leaders at every level is a critical to do for us. The new leaders are bringing in a great degree of positivity and becoming instruments of change. Compare Infobase is once again savoring acceptable productivity levels from an increasingly growing number of team members.
  2. Compare Infobase today is an organization which is continuously teaching. Everyone is  getting and utilizing an opportunity to teach whatever they know. The culture of teaching is also increasing the bonding between the colleagues and leading to better one is to one working equations.
  3. Winners need to be promoted, we are working hard to identify and promote them. At the same time we are going extra miles to work with losers in overcoming their drawbacks.  There is very strong desire to give every loser a more than equal opportunity to spot winner in them and bring it out. Some are succeeding while others have been told to move on.
  4. Zero stagnation of the individual and the organization must be achieved. Simultaneous growth is must, it leads to completing the much cherished desire for inclusive growth. We are asking ourselves repeatedly “are we adding sufficient value to you and you are adding sufficient value right back to the organization.”
  5. We are reaching out to many individuals and explaining the need for performing in perpetuity and getting over the desire to refer to “great performance done  in the past.” We are explaining the need for accepting that past has been paid for and over, it is the present which needs to be accounted for and improved.
  6. We couldn’t sustain performance in the past, we have now found ways to ensure right amount of hand-holding for sustaining performance across the organization.
  7. In most of the interactions the individuals are being told to bring about change by creating a mix of ideas and energy.  Some are finding the concept very tough while some are finding it interesting and taking it as an indicator of their ownership and belonging.
  8. There was a negative notion of “performance is never enough” to address this notion we are seeking participation of satisfied individuals who believe that performance only counts.
  9. It was important to address the issue that the organization carries and supports no biases, we have worked in that direction by single focus on “organization comes first.”
  10. There was a need to re-look at number of working hours in a day and number of working days. Reducing the  number of working days without increasing number of hours in a day has sent a clear signal that we recognize that it is productivity and not just about time.
  11. Inter group/ division issues were hindering performance, creation of  user-groups for quicker actions and openly acknowledging organizational priorities has helped.
  12. In many cases appraisals were overdue, by rolling out a simplified appraisal system which replaces an elaborate system we have tried to address real time bread and butter question in a quicker fashion.
  13. Good food is good food for thought too. By increasing HR participation and addressing the caterers issues we have reworked  working day and Friday menu with the caterer.
  14. Internet connectivity within the building and at home through data cards has been improved and so has been the capacity of web-servers.

All of the above steps have collectively led to significant drop in attrition levels. Resignations are now significantly lower than “lack of performance” exits. The overall attrition rate is now significantly lower than the industry standard of 8% per quarter. Many more changes are getting in place and we hope that all of them would help us in making Compare Infobase a dream SME to work for in next two to three years.

It is said that your place of work speaks about who you are. Your table, your chair, your clutter, your phones, your flowers and your books all have a tale to tell.

My office and my home workstation are identical, the are mid size rooms with lot of free space every where. I like it this way. Adding a glass top table added to the feel of large space which I needed very badly.

Tough three years are firmly behind us, Compare Infobase is once again on the way to become a near zero attrition level company from a high 10% attrition levels a month only a year ago. Daily training programs have alot to do in making this happen. Compare Infobase (Currently limited to Delhi office) provides scheduled 5 training sessions every week. Almost all training sessions have a waiting list and many sessions now also have repeat requests, feels good.

If we study the reasons for tremendous success we can cull out three catalysts:

  1. All sessions are open to all
  2. Best of the in-house respected and admired faculty as trainers
  3. All training sessions are during the working hours at prime working time

All the three steps are new to Compare but they have worked and continue working very well.

Website Incubation and Compare Infobase May 5, 2009

Since quite sometime i have been thinking of penning down my thoughts on what i do for a living.  whenever I sat down to do this, I landed up asking myself hundreds of questions and the net result, nothing penned down.  Today I am sitting with the intent of making an all out effort of writing down synopsis of last 11 years of work.

In 1998, Compare Infobase Limited was incorporated as a Private Limited company with the mandate of developing and selling websites.  For a company to have developing and selling websites as its objective was as new in 1999 as it is today.  Almost all Internet companies worldwide focus on developing one or two or may be a handful of websites and then ramped them up to very large sites.  Somehow I wanted to develop an organization which worked on many websites at lower and middle range of price brackets.  The genesis of this thought probably was the conservative upbringing and lack of readiness to put all eggs in 1 basket.

Compare Infobase started with its 1st website Indiaprofile.com, which was made with an objective of projecting India to the world.  http://indiaprofile.com was sold to a tour operator after 5 years of its incorporation and is now a descent revenue generator for its new owner.

Mapsofindia.com was more a need of the time then a journey into cartography.  Plain and simple there were no Indian point of view maps of Internet way back in 1998.  The UN adopted Map of India which truncates Kashmir and certain other parts of India was the most prevalent and the known face of India on the Internet.  http://mapsofindia.com since then has grown to be a site which attracts over 100,000 people everyday and a site which has made the Map of India with India’s point of view, the recognizable face of India.

Something very funny happened in 2006, General Musharraf made a presentation to global audience on Pakistan and its investment potential and as the luck would have it the presentation had the map of Pakistan without the part of Kashmir which Pakistan claims as their own.  It was very embarrassing for Pakistan for General Musharraf and a cause of big celebration at Compare.  We could hear ourselves saying that Mapsofindia has done what it has set out to do – job done, mission accomplished.

With over 100,000 pages of mapping and generic information on India, Mapsofindia.com is one of the largest primary repositories of information on India.

Compare Infobase took a conscious call not to sell Mapsofindia but to grow it for itself and to nurture other sites on various verticals on India.

Running Mapsofindia gave ideas for a whole bunch of websites.  Compare decided to foray Education, Economy, Travel, Jobs, Handicrafts and Celebrations.  1999 saw a host of websites launched by Compare Infobase.  Indiaedu.com took the mantle of covering the education vertical for Compare. Indiaedu.com created India’s 1st database of education Institutes and the site which started with just 20 pages is today a repository of over 20,000 educational Institutions in India and was recently sold by us and is now a flourishing independent business.  There is a smile on my face everytime I look at Indiaedu and this smile is of satisfaction.
http://indiaedu.com
is a unique example of Silicon Valley reaching out to India.  Indiaedu.com is owned by two Silicon Valley professionals, both of them have never been to India and nor have had any Indian relative.  Its a pure business for them, which they are pursuing and growing.  Compare Infobase continues to maintain and manage its incubation on their behalf, the quality standards and the best practices which have been put in place ensure that the site keeps growing day after day.

If Indiaedu.com got sold to Silicon Valley professionals based in Silicon Valley then an advertising and marketing geek decided to buy
http://economywatch.com
for his Singapore run business.  Economywatch.com covers India and the US Economy in great detail and now under its new ownership covers economies of other countries as well.  Once again Compare remains associated with this unique project and continues to contribute to its growth.  If the clock is to put back to 1998–99, one can’t help reflecting upon the easy availability of the right domain name of the right Incubation project.  Compare was incubating projects then, Compare is incubation projects now, but the projects being incubated now struggle for good domain names – I wish we would find some way out to have relevant domain names easily available to us.  Economy Watch, a great domain name, a great site, a good owner, an idea incubated, a business created, a business sold, another smile of satisfaction.

More to come…

Compare Infobase Current Portfolio February 22, 2009

I owe this post to Compare Infobase, the company I founded the company I work for. I am often asked for a link to important e-businesses we own or manage and I try to put together a list for the person who is asking for it. We do have a website, but it just doesn’t keep pace with what all we are doing. So here is as straight as it can get -

Compare Infobase is in the business of developing, selling and maintaining e-businesses.
Some of the e-businesses which we currently own:

Maps of World – http://mapsofworld.com (MoW) MoW is one of the top ten mapping sites in the world. It is a matter of great pride for us that Mapsofworld.com has become a bigger online brand than the good old Rand Mc Nally. Yes today more people log into Mapsofworld.com from all over the world over those who log into Ranmcnally.com

The site is now a Quantcast top 1500 sites in the US and we are confident that it would break into top 100 sites within six months, maybe sooner. The site appeals to students and business alike, and people from all walks of website design recommend its homepage for reference on what a good homepage design should be.

Maps of India – Mapsofindia.com (MoI) is India’s first and number one Mapping site. Having retained its position as the premier site for mapping refernence in India since its inception – MoI continues to be a profitable and growing venture. The subdomains of MoI – http://business.mapsofindia.com and http://travel.mapsofindia.com have made a unique place for themselves in their respective verticals. MoI has been a mother site to many other vertical specific independent sites, these sites are now doing reasonably well in their respective verticals. http://IndiaEdu.comhttp://Headlinesindia.com in News and http;//IndiaHousing.com in Housing have all been promoted by Mapsoindia.com and have been born out of one sub section of Mapsofindia.com

Headlines India – http;//HeadlinesiNdia.com

My Dear Valentine – http://MyDearValentine.com

Dgreetings – http://Dgreetings.com

Dil Khol Ke Bol – http://DilKholKeBol.com

UURL – http://UURL.in

Beauty Tips Hub – http://BeautyTipsHub.com

SitaGita.com – A New Chapter January 31, 2009

It has always been tough to provide an answer to the question – What does Compare Infobase do? Congratulations to everyone associated with Compare Infobase, it just became tougher. With the first cut strategy laid out for SitaGita.com Compare Infobase gets into re-engineering external projects for incubation gains. Complex. Yes.
Problem Statement: SitaGita.com is a great site visualized and nurtured by one of the finest women entrepreneurs in the country and developed with lots of personal interest and passion needs to keep pace with the changing face of Internet. Solution: Just re-engineer it. If Compare Infobase could re-engineer its own sites and keep them growing and competing against the “deep pocket”, “mint fresh idea” ones, it could as well do it for external projects. That is what we thought and we have got going on.

Inspiration for the SitaGita.com re-engineering would be Mapsofindia.com. The task ahead is defined – document what we did right with Mapsofindia.com and see how the core of it can be deployed in SitaGita.com.

Our re-engineering would include – asset management, asset renewal, asset enhancement and asset additions. In next one month we have ten defined initiatives which we want to initiate and complete. The most exciting of these initiatives is a SitaGita.com for the age group of 17- 35 years, Sigi.in – Yes Sigi is in, and Sigi is going to move the young Indian Women like nothing has ever done before. Sigi is a breath of fresh air and Sigi would be all over India and the world. Sigi would begin her journey from Chennai and would land up in San Jose and every-time she will take a different route for the same. If Sigi excites me no-end, news.SitaGita.com promises to become a benchmark for women centric news.

Update: November 9, 2010 – Compare Infobase Limited and self have disassociated ourselves from Management of SitaGita.com and other sites within the umbrella. We still own 1/3 of the company but it is now a pure investment without any management participation and responsibility.

Mapsofindia.com The Story Continues January 3, 2009

Mapsofindia.com along-with Indiamart.com are two sites which have stood on their own for now over ten years. Maps of India has been owned by Compare Infobase and my friend Dinesh Aggarwal has been running India Mart ever-since. Dinesh about an year back get into an investment alliance with a Times of India group company and has been working to take India Mart to higher heights. On the other side his decision left MapsofIndia.com as the only non VC funded business in the Indian Internet space.

Do Internet businesses which are not VC or PE funded have any long-term chance of growth and market leadership? It is a tough question. There may not be any easy answers to it. It depends on which vertical you are in and how passionate you are about the business. Having said this, would Mapsofindia.com continue leading the Indian mapping space on the Internet? As of now it looks like yes. The site has been growing and maintaining its position. It was a top 250 website in the Indian Internet space when there were only 2,000 sites focused on India. It maintains its position today competing against over 200,000 websites focused on India. For the long-run say next ten years, Mapsofindia.com has a lot to do, it has to grow by relationships as much as it has to grow by technology enhancements and product offerings. MOI needs to have a reason for every age group, every business, every ethnic group from every geography to hit the site at-least hundred times every day. Which in numbers means the site must get at-least 100 Sindhis in the age group 11 – 17 to visit MOI everyday, and it must get 100 visitors from Jabalpur too. Everyone must get a need fulfilled by being on Mapsofindia. It must mean a lot more than a map website to them.

To achieve this Mapsofindia must set its goal higher. It must target top 100 position in next two years. It must target a Google Page Rank of 8, it must target information seekers (for India) from all countries to find and use Mapsofindia.

There is a bright future for Mapsofindia, and I am confident that the team Mapsofindia led by Mani and Usha would ensure that it grows and maintains its status in the Internet space.

Diwali Mela and Virtual Rakhi get a new organizer July 4, 2008

Business synergies are critical. Small business doesn’t make sense for anyone anymore, more so for those who have other assets and businesses to handle.

Compare Infobase now owns over 1600 websites and portals, I remember at the best the names or existence of about 200 of them, as Compare’s business is to develop and sell websites, selling a website is a business transaction. Whenever we sell an Internet site which is known, we are asked don’t you feel bad after selling the site? My answer is we loved developing it and owning it and we love the act of selling it, this is our business. The second part of my answer actually is not palatable to people, “We make effort to sell to a buyer who would do justice to the site”. Most of the people find the answer a guilt cover, which it is not as selling is a pleasure and not a guilt. The new owner group of
http://www.diwalimela.com
(Diwali Mela) are well established players, they understand sites as much as we do and they desire to pursue e-commerce business. Dinesh Aggarwal is a dear friend and an old business associate, Dinesh is more known for India Mart however he also owns Intermesh Shopping Network which has bought Diwali Mela and its stablemate
http://www.virtualrakhi.com
  (Virtual Rakhi).

Diwali Mela was born as a concept of holding a global Diwali Mela or an Exhibition on the Internet. We used it like that for few years, but somehow we always felt that our job was not to manage a business of the site, we were comfortable managing and developing the site. With Diwali Mela and Virtual Rakhi (Our site for the festivals of Raksha Bandhan and not a virtual Rakhi Sawant… LoL) sold we exit from one of the business lines which we were reluctant players in.

Diwali Mela and Virtual Rakhi leave behind fond memories and great learning experience, we wish both the sites best of luck and great success with their new owners.
